The Brilliance of Cufflinks
I was just promoted to upper management at my company, and as I was shopping for the new wardrobe I needed to
make the right impressions I recalled that as a young boy my dad and I would go downtown every Saturday and even
though cufflinks were a luxury he couldn't afford we liked to go to the jewelry store to look at cufflinks
together. It was always a magical experience gazing into the brilliantly illuminated glass displays at all the
gleaming engraved cufflinks on display. He would always get me by the arm and pull me away from the case so I
wouldn't get my messy hands on the glass, but in spite of his efforts I would always find a way to get away from
his grasp and get my grubby fingers and nose all over the case. That was always my favorite part too, looking at
all the engraved cufflinks. I always had a fascination with engraved cufflinks. I mean, how neat it is that you
can really customize an item of jewelry in a way that makes it completely unique and the only one of its kind? I
would imagine the hours it took a craftsman to cut out the metal on each piece, with precision, over time. Of
course when I got older I learned that the artisans use a machine to cut out all the elaborate designs and patterns
but as a young child it was fascinating anyway and as the old saying goes ignorance is bliss. Dad is retired now
and was never one who dressed up often, but I couldn't resist picking up an extra set of cufflinks that day,
engraved just for him, so he too would have a reminder of our fun times together.
